INTRODUCTION ABOUT HAIPHONG UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY

INTRODUCTION
 
In 1979, Ha Noi Medical University formally established the second Campus in Hai Phong after years of sending medical students to practice here. In 1985, Second Campus was developed as University Branch of Hai Phong Medical University under Ha Noi Medical University. In 1999, Hai Phong Medical University was established under the basis of Hai Phong Medical University Branch, according to Decision No. 06/1999/QĐ-TTg of the Government Prime Minister. 
On November 11, 2013, the Prime Minister signed Decision No. 2153 / QD-TTg to rename Hai Phong Medical University as Haiphong University of Medicine and Pharmacy, under the Ministry of Health authority.
University's mission is to develop into a Research and Training Centre of Medicine and Pharmacy Science, transfer reputable technology domestically and internationally, provide high-quality medical human resources to meet the demand of people healthcare and protection, especially medical major of sea-island.
Haiphong University of Medicine and Pharmacy currently has more than 700 staffs and lecturers, in which 500 permanent staffs in university and 200 staffs in hospitals, including 07 Professors; 28 Associate Professors; 77 PhDs, 180 Masters, 65 specialist II doctors, or equivalent, and 285 concurrent post lecturers at main practice facilities. With nearly 40 years of construction and development, Haiphong University Of Medicine and Pharmacy has trained more than 10000 doctors, nurses, university graduates and postgraduates, highly-appreciated at local medical facilities in the whole country. Since 2015, the annual number of new entrants to the university is 950 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate students.


SERVICE UNITS
The Bureaus, Departments are held under common rules for universities and colleges, performing the function of advising and assisting the managing board in training management, scientific research, catering and university services.
The Departments of Personnel,  Undergraduate Training and Student Affairs; Graduate Training, Scientific Management; International Cooperation; General Administration; Finance-Accounting, Materials and Devices; Political Work; Governance; Information Technology. The bureaus of Construction Project Management, Executive Board of health projects, Educational Inspection committee, People's Inspection.
The Centers, Units of Education: Center for Educational Testing and Quality Assurance, Research Unit for Community Medicine, Center for Library Information, Teaching Unit for Traning Methods, Teaching Unit for Science Research Methods, Laboratory of Molecular Biotechnology, Prenatal test center, Center for Sea Pharmaceuticals Research, Center for International Training and Management, Center for Student Services and Domitory Management, Scientific Research Journals.
Service Units: The univeristy has been establishing the units with service functions  to meet the demand of society and contribute to improve incomes for staffs, simultaneously contribute to the development of univeristy training and scientific research. The current units are: Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre, Training Cooperation-Development Centre. 

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS AND FACULTIES
Faculty of Fundamental Science
Faculty of Fundamental Science includes Mathematics, Informatics, Medical Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Genetics, Foreign Languages, Political Theory, Physical Education and National Defense Education. The Faculty takes responsibility for giving general knowledge to all students of training majors according to regulations of each program (Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing ...). In the trend of development and integration, Faculty of Fundamental Science will develop and expand educational forms and improve the capacity of collaboration and research training for related majors. 
School of Medicine
School of Medicine is the lagrest program of the university which includes departments of basic medical sciences and clinical medicine.
Basic Medicine includes the subjects: Anatomy, Physiology, Immunology Pathophysiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Parasitology, Tissue and Embryo Studies, Anatomy and Forensic Diseases, Pharmacology, Medical Psychology and Ethics. The school is responsible for lecturing the modules of basic knowledge in the majors and branches for allstudents. Basic medicine is the foundation of implementation of intensive research and development of health-related sciences, such as medical technology, pharmacy...
Clinical Medicine includes the subjects of General Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases, Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, Psychiatry, Neurology, Dermatology, Traditional Medicine, Rehabilitation, Allergy Clinical Immunology, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Diagnostic Imaging.
Medical doctor training is the key mission of the university since the early period of establishment. Every year, the university enrolls 450 full-time students (6 years) and 200 connected students (4 years). Students have chance to learn theories and practice at school and practice in hospitals (about 5000 patient-beds) and medical facilities in the area of Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Hai Duong.
The university has been training students of postgraduate education in majors of Specialist doctor I, Specialist doctor II, Master and Resident Physician of Inpatient, Outpatient, Department of Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases, and Pediatrics Doctor, associated with scientific research and practical applicability. In the development plan for the next 5 years, the university will develop training doctors specialized in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology.
International cooperation on education, scientific research is the strength of the Medicine field. The university has a formal partnership with more than 20 medical universities, hospitals, research institutions of the European countries, USA, Japan, Korea on student exchange, scientific research. Many good-quality scientific research projects have been implemented, including 4 State theses under the Protocol of cooperation with Japan, Taiwan, USA.

Faculty of Dentistry
Faculty of Dentistry was founded in 2009 on the basis of Dentistry Division since 1979, including 6 Departments: Basic Dental Science and Dental X-ray, Periodontal and minor surgery, Maxillofacial surgery and oral pathology, Conservative Dentistry, Prosthodontics and prosthetic technique, Preventive and developing dentistry, the faculty office and 3 affiliated units, preclinical practice areas, the applied area of new technologies in health care, Japan-Vietnam International Dental Center
Currently, there are over 400 specialist students, the annual enrollment of 60 students for full-time training (6 years), the faculty has been training specialist doctor level I since 2009 and implementing to open the branch code of masters, specialist doctor level II training since 2016.
The faculty consists of 32 members, including 1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor, 11 Masters, 20 concurrent post lecturers with doctoral degree or higher. The Faculty of Dentistry holds scientific conferences and annual continuing education, once a year with 400- 500 participants. International cooperation activities with Japan  (Okayama University), France (Brest University), Korea (Seoul National University), has created great opportunities in improving capabilities of lecturers. Some of them are currently granted with research scholarships in Japan. There are 4-5 lecturers and students getting exchange programs in short terms in Japan every year.

Faculty of Public Health
Faculty of Public Health was founded in 2009, including 8 specialized departments: Epidemiology, Nutrition and Food Safety, Health Organization and Law, Health Education, Environmental Health, Occupational Health, Health Economics, Biostatistics and Demography. The faculty includes 20 members with 3 Associate Professors, 1 PhD, 12 masters and 4 doctors.  
Faculty of Public Health is carrying out several researches in public health and preventive medicine. It is providing undergraduate training of Preventive Medicine Doctors (60 students/year, 6-year curriculum). Faculty of Public Health is also the pioneer in postgraduate training, starting from public health oriented specialization, specialist doctor I, master degree and PhD of Public Health, specialist doctor II of Health Management. The faculty has strong international training and research collaboration with many universities in the world, especially institutions in Francophone University Association. In recent years, the faculty has expanded the research cooperation with new institutions, multinational research agencies and professional associations in Asia and North America, such as the universities and research agencies in ASEAN, China, Japan, Canada and in USA.

Faculty of Nursing
Faculty of Nursing was formerly a part of Department of Fundamental Nursing.  In 2005, the university first admitted students to the nursing undergraduate training program. In 2009, Faculty of Nursing was established with 5 departments including Community Nursing, Fundamental Nursing, Adult Clinical Nursing, Child Nursing, Gynecology Nursing andSkillslab Center. The faculty has 32 full-time teaching staffsand many concurrent post lecturers from other departments and regional hopitals. The faculty includes1 Associate Professor, 1 PhD, one specialist doctor II, 14 masters degree.Three masters of nursing graduated in Thailand and three lecturersare currently enrolled in PhD programsin Japan and Vietnam.           
The faculty has co-operated in training and scientific research with many nursing schools all over the world. Lecturers have many opportunities of education and training in Australia, Sweden, Japan, Thailand, and Taiwan. In 2012, the faculty signed an agreement for the training and exchange of lecturers and students with nursing faculty of Kristianstad University in Swedenand Brest University in France. Up to 2016, the faculty has received students from Agen University. In 2014, the faculty organized the international nursing conference, with national and international experts attending, to contribute to training activities and scientific nursing-related research. International cooperation and collaboration provide opportunities for nursing lecturers and students to improve professional qualifications, and foreign language skills as well as to open up avenues for learning exchange, cooperationand technology transfer from advanced countries to the faculty and Haiphong University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
In the next term, the faculty will enhance competency-based teaching in the education and training of nursing staff to integrate with countries in the region by improving the quality of teaching staff, as well as domestic and foreign cooperation and collaboration.

Faculty of Medical Technology
Faculty of Medical Technology was founded on June 28, 2012 on the basis of Medical Technology Division (founded in 2009) including subjects: 
Hematology Technology and Blood Transfusion, Microbiology Technology, Biochemistry - Immunology Technology, Molecular Biology Technology, Parasitology Technology, Surgery Technology, Diagnostic Imaging Technology, Rehabilitation Technology. The faculty includes 46 members with 8 PhDs, 11 masters and 16 concurrent staffs (5 PhDs, 9 masters). The mission of the faculty is training medical staff with university degree (60 students annually, 4-year-system) and postgraduate in the field of Testing Techniques. Since the school year of 2015-2016, the faculty has had the intermediate and college training to get testing the university qualification, test specialist I (school year 2016-2017) and test specialist master (school year 2017-2018).
Scientific staffs of the faculty have good professional capability and experience to implement scientific researches in many fields, regularly update knowledge, new techniques through short-term training courses domestically and internationally. The laboratories of the Faculty is both practice and teaching facilities for students, simultaneously deploying scientific research and development of high-tech test for disease diagnosis. Faculty of Medical Technology has coordinated with Faculty of Medicine to successfully implement two international cooperation projects with University Kanazawa - Japan and conducting a cooperation project with USC center, University of Southern California, USA.
With the development orientation, Faculty of Medical Technology focuses on enhancing technologies of majors including Biochemistry, Microbiology, Parasitology and anapathology; developing and applying molecular biology techniques; techniques for early diagnosis of cancer; the field of stem cell gene-protein research, disease diagnosis before, during and after birth; training on major of testing of post-graduate degree, consulting on testing techniques for medical facilities in the Northern Coastal region; strengthening cooperation in scientific research.

Faculty of Traditional Medicine
Traditional medicine department has been working since 1979. In 2015, the Faculty of Traditional Medicine was establised with 5 departments:  Theories of Traditional Medicine, Traditional Pharmacy, Acupuncture and non-pharmacological methods, Internal – Pediatrics of Traditional Medicine, Surgery- Gynecology of Traditional Medicine. The faculty’s mission is to train traditional doctors ( 6 years), do research and service on traditional medicine sector. There are 13 full – time staffs: 2 PhDs, 5 masters, 1 specialist doctor I. In the school year of 2015- 2016, the school started enrolling  and training traditional doctors, 60 students annually. The university also trains post-graduate specialist doctor I of traditional medicine, doctor of traditional medicine orientation with several courses graduated from university and meet the demand of Traditional Medicine Units. The faculty coordinates with the Pharmaceutical Faculty to develop specialized subjects of Sea Pharmacology which is one of the new contents for being focused.
Faculty of Traditional Medicine has taken the first steps to develop relations with foreign countries in the field of academic experience exchange, learning to enhance of professional qualifications, signing for cooperation, especially Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. In the upcoming period, Faculty of Traditional Medicine plans to enhance the opportunities for lecturers to learn and collaboratively research domestically and abroad, especially in China, Taiwan, and improve Chinese proficiency for lecturers and students.

Faculty of Pharmacy
Faculty of Pharmacy was founded in 2011, with 6 departments and some service units: Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacy, Drug Administration and Economics, Preparation and Biopharmaceutical, Plants and Medicinal Materials, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Quality Assurance, Research Center for Marine Pharmacognosy. The faculty includes 39 specialized staffs, in which there are 1 Associate Professor, 3 PhDs, 19 Masters. 120 permanent lecturers in Basic and Clinical Medicine of the university participate in teaching for related specialized subjects. Apart from the enrollment quota of 100 regular students per year (university pharmacists, 5 years), the faculty also trains inter-system pharmacists from college to university.
Faculty of Pharmacy has partnered with some universities in the United States (Iowa University, Samford University), Korea (Sookmyung Women's University), Japan (Okayama University), Taiwan (Taipei Medical University), Thailand (Chulalongkorn University). Faculty of Pharmacy organized 13th Asian Conference on Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) in September 2013 in Hai Phong and become the standing unit for organizing the 4th Pharmacy Deans Forum of Asian Association of Schools of Pharmacy, in Hai Phong, from 24th to 26th of June 2016. Many international specialists come to lecture and exchange research and many lecturers have been studying in USA, Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan and Australia annually.
Together with the Practice Labobratories in univeristy, the faculty is ongoing process to develop the Practice Drugstores, Clinical Pharmacy Units in VietTiep Hospital, Hai Phong Medical University Hospital, Hai Phong Children’s Hospital. Faculty of Pharmacy is the pioneer in developing, training and orienting Clinical Pharmacy and development research medicine from sea pharmaceuticals of Vietnam. In the development plan until 2020, the faculty will comprehensively innovate the training program of undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacists to meet the need of quality health care for people and as the trend of international integration.

Faculty of Maritime Medicine
 
Faculty of Maritime Medicinewas founded in 2015, developed from Maritime Medicine department which was the first Faculty of Maritime Medicine founded in Viet Nam. Maritime Medicine Specialization has determined the development orientation in some fields formed as subjects: Underwater Medicine and Clinical High Pressure Medicine, Preventive Maritime Medicine, Maritime Clinical Medicine, Emergency and Maritime Disaster Prevention, Psychophysiology of Marine Labor and Ergonomie.
Faculty of Maritime Medicine has teaching and research facilities in Vietnam National Institute of Maritime Medicine (Ministry of Health), undertakes to teach Maritime Medicine for medical students, and trains for major of Maritime Medicine Master. The faculty is the top training facility for Maritime Medicine in the whole country.

THE PRACTICE FACILITIES
Hai Phong Medical University Hospital 
Hai Phong Medical University Hospital is an academic health care setting established directly affiliated to HPMU on April 4th, 2007 by the Ministry of Health, beside its assigned tasks of training medical practitioners and undertaking research and development for further progress in fundamental and clinical medicine, with its quality human resource and in collaborating with its national and international partners, HPMU hospital is committed to providing quality  medical care to patients with advanced, evidence-based and at-furthermost-limits knowledges, skills and  technologies, and in an ethical manner. 
In 2016, HPMU hospital was recognized as and classed 2nd rank at central level the Ministry of Health. HPMU hospital has planned to be an extensive healthcare system developing and giving safe and high-quality medical care for patients across the spectrum of health problems, from outpatient visits for routine screenings to hyperacute emergencies and most complicated health issues, and with a sense of mission, responsibility and compassion. 
The practice hospital in Hai Phong and in local provinces.
Viet Tiep hospital, the top-level hospital with top expertise of Northern Coastal region and more than 1000 patient-beds is the main practice facility of the university. Hundreds of permanent and part-time lecturers of the hospital are holding a key role in the clinical departments, carrying out tasks  on medical care, research and training.
Kien An General Hospital (400 sickbeds), Haiphong Children’s Hospital (600 sickbeds), Hai Phong Obstetrics Hospital (600 sickbeds), Hospital of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, Traditional Medicine Hospital, Psychiatric Hospital are the main practice hospital of Haiphong University of Medicine and Pharmacy since the early period of establishment. Vietnam - Sweden hospital (Uong Bi, 1000 sickbeds), General Hospital of Hai Duong Province, Quang Ninh are large medical facilities, chosen to be the practice facilities for all training majors of university.
Medical centers of provinces, districts, hospitals, drugstores, pharmaceutical companies in Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Quang Ninh are selected and oriented, with trained fieldwork teaching staffs to become the learning and practice locations for students in all training majors of university.
